abstract = {Enterprise Architecture (EA) plays a vital role in aligning business and IT, yet its implementation often encounters challenges due to evolving needs and past architectural decisions. These challenges, termed Enterprise Architecture debt (EA debt), arise from short-term decisions or misalignments that hinder progress toward an optimal architecture. This study proposes two taxonomies: one to characterize EA debt descriptively and another to assess its impact. The taxonomies were developed using systematic literature reviews and refined with practitioner feedback. They offer a structured approach to identify, describe, and evaluate EA debts, enabling organizations to address them systematically. The study demonstrates the application of the taxonomies through a real-world case example, illustrating their potential to support strategic and operational decision-making. These contributions aim to enhance the theoretical foundation and practical management of EA debts, fostering better alignment of architectures with organizational goals.},

abstract = {Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are under increasing pressure to digitalize in order to remain competitive. However, they often lack the resources, capabilities, or strategic clarity to initiate such transformations. While the Business Model Canvas (BMC) is widely used as a planning tool, it is not specifically designed to address the challenges and priorities of SME digitalization. This thesis presents the development of a Digital Transformation Canvas tailored to the SME context. Using the DSR approach, a structured literature review was conducted to identify existing canvas models as well as SME digitalization literature to synthesize these findings into seven overarching clusters. The resulting canvas prototype was evaluated and adapted through three evaluation cycles in the form of an expert interview and two case studies with real SME. The Digital Transformation Canvas aims to offer SME a structured and clear way to reflect on their digital transformation potential and challenges. While further testing is required, the results indicate practical applicability and relevance for use in workshops or ideation.},

abstract = {Die digitale Transformation stellt Unternehmen vor weitreichende technologische, strukturelle und kulturelle Herausforderungen. Trotz zahlreicher theoretischer Ansätze fehlt es bislang an einem konsistenten Prinzipienkatalog, der Unternehmen als Orientierungsrahmen im Transformationsprozess dient. Ziel dieser Masterarbeit ist die Entwicklung, Validierung und Anwendung eines solchen Katalogs zur strukturierten Steuerung der digitalen Transformation in Organisationen. Auf Grundlage einer systematischen Literaturrecherche wurden relevante Herausforderungen, bestehende Management-Frameworks sowie Best Practices identifiziert. Aus diesen Erkenntnissen wurde ein Prinzipienkatalog entlang der vier Dimensionen Strategie, Agilität, Kompetenz und Governance entwickelt. Die Validierung erfolgte durch semistrukturierte Experteninterviews, in denen die Relevanz und Praktikabilität der entwickelten Prinzipien bewertet wurden. Die Ergebnisse bestätigen die Anwendbarkeit und Praxisnähe des Katalogs und lieferten ergänzende Impulse wie Nachhaltigkeit und demografische Faktoren, welche nachträglich berücksichtigt wurden. Der Katalog bietet Unternehmen ein strukturiertes Instrument zur Operationalisierung digitaler Transformationsstrategien. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass ein prinzipienbasierter Ansatz nicht nur technologischen Wandel adressiert, sondern auch organisationale Resilienz und kontinuierliche Lernfähigkeit fördert. Die Ergebnisse liefern zugleich Ansatzpunkte für die zukünftige Forschung, etwa durch die Entwicklung branchenspezifischer Reifegradmodelle.},

abstract = {Conducting a digital transformation is one of the major challenges for today’s companies as it is usually associated with a high risk. The reasons for this are manifold. Technologies are still evolving and there is no coherent standard for digital platforms enabling digitalization. Furthermore, it is not only about introducing new technology but also requires a fundamental change in an organization and its culture. Consequently, planning a digital transformation project (or program) requires a careful analysis of the company’s current situation and the envisioned objectives. This article investigates critical success factors for preparing and executing such a transformation. The success factors are identified by conducting a structured literature analysis. 13 scientific papers are identified and then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative analysis is conducted by using force-directed network graphs. Both methods are then compared and discussed. The result shows that most critical success factors are related to the business change rather than to introducing technology. Leadership, strategy, vision, corporate culture, and customer centricity play a stronger role than a digital platform.},

abstract = {The term Enterprise Architecture (EA) Debts has been coined to grasp the difference between the actual state of the EA and its hypothetical, optimal state. So far, different methods have been proposed to identify such EA Debts in organizations. However, these methods either are based on the transfer of known concepts from other domains to EA or are time and resource intensive. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose an approach that uses an interview format to identify EA Debts in enterprises and a method that allows a qualitative assessment of identified EA Debts. abstract = {The Enterprise Architecture (EA) discipline is now established in many companies. The architectures of these companies changed over time. They resulted from a long creation and maintenance process containing processes and services provided by legacy IT systems (e.g., systems, applications) that were reasonable when they were created but might now hamper the introduction of better solutions. To handle those legacies, we started researching on the notion of EA debts, which widens the scope of technical debts to organizational aspects. However, no studies have yet been conducted to validate if the concept of EA debts has a positive influence. Within this work, we have experimented with students of an EA course. Half of the students were taught the concept of EA debts, while the other half was taught about another topic simultaneously. Afterward, the students performed a modeling task graded by EA experts among the criteria of effectiveness, comprehensibility, minimality, and completeness. The analysis revealed no significant difference between the quality of the created models by the different student groups.},

abstract = {Similar to many other companies, the IT department at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences is responsible for providing and supporting a set of applications that are used by different organisational units. There are still some insecurities, for example undefined responsibilities, or no clear understanding about the business fit of the whole application landscape. The current architecture is a result of uncontrolled growth, which also leads to missing documentation, as well as a missing Enterprise Architecture model. The following case study has the objective to analyse and document the Enterprise Architecture of the university. The purpose of this model is to make the university’s landscape more transparent, enabling conscious and fact-based decisions for future software applications against the as-is landscape and relevant needs of the organisation. To achieve this, a Business Capability Map, a Business Object Model, an Application landscape and a Business Support Matrix were created as artefacts.},

abstract = {The Enterprise Architecture (EA) discipline evolved during the past two decades and is now established in a large number of companies. Architectures in these companies changed over time and are now the result of a long creation and maintenance process. Such architectures still contain processes and services provided by legacy IT systems (e.g., systems, applications) that were reasonable during the time they were created but might now hamper the introduction of better solutions. In order to support handling those legacies, research on the notion of EA debts has been started. The concept of EA debts widens the scope of technical debts to cover also organizational aspects offering a mean for managing EA in dynamic environments. The research encompasses the development of methods for managing debts together with a repository of typical EA debts. Identifying EA debts for the repository is challenging as required knowledge is usually not documented. Therefore, a structured approach is needed to externalize this knowledge. The paper presents a workshop format that is used to identify EA debts in organizations. Corresponding workshops are performed in two distinct companies to support them in understanding certain issues they face. First results from those workshops are presented in the second part of the paper.},

Even though these debts might have a big impact, it is sometimes hard to identify them explicitly
due to the complexity of the organization and its processes. Methodical support is required in
order to help with identifying them and mitigating the associated risk.
Hitherto, we have proposed the concept of EA Debts arising from the concept of TD. While TD
focuses on technical aspects, like flaws in the code basis or issues with the database design, EA
Debts try to capture a holistic view on the organization. EA Debts cover aspects among all EA
layers but also their interdependencies. We assume that the concept of EA Debts can help enterprise architects to cope with the upcoming challenges related to digitalization and agile projects.
It provides them with a means to visualize the consequences of certain decisions on the EA and,
thus, eases their argumentation towards a more sustainable architecture.
As the concept of EA Debts is relatively young, it offers a wide spectrum of future research activities: Adopting established metrics that can contribute to the assessment of EA Debt, but also
developing new metrics. Thresholds need to be determined that indicate when a metric’s value
should be interpreted as critical. Management techniques need to be established that keep the
level of EA Debt in an organization under control. Finally, socio-technical aspects related to EA
Debts in organizations should not be neglected.
In our talk, we like to introduce the topic to the audience and gather their feedback. Furthermore,
we like to invite other researchers to contribute to the EA Debt related stream of research in

abstract = {Agile methods for tend to improve the quality of software development projects by imposing a strong customer focus and continuous risk mitigation with every iteration. It seems that they are about to substitute existing development methods in professional environment. However, agile methods are still no silver bullets as they have some limitations. They are designed for small projects that require continuous customer feedback. They also suffer from supporting internationally distributed development environments as customers and development teams need to be at the same location. Methods like for example the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) were arising since a couple of years in order to overcome the limitations of agile methods. They define additional coordination stages and, therefore, impose some additional complexity on applying them. The paper at hands aims at providing a pragmatic solution for the application of agile methods in a global environment. Many organizations already adopted methods and tools for requirements engineering in the past and these can be combined with agile methods. The paper summarizes requirements engineering and analysis agile methods with respect to gaps to requirements engineering methods. It will then provide an overview on how requirements engineering may complement today’s agile methods.},

abstract = {Following up a discussion during TEAR 2018 the paper at hands presents the results of a study for identifying tangible benefits expected from Enterprise Architecture in a corporate environment. There is a plethora of text books and papers available, but they rather address general or high-level benefits like transparency, alignment (strategic or between business and IT, planning (strategic, tactical or operational). These are often not addressing specific concerns within a company so that they seem to be abstract. This paper summarizes the feedback provided by Enterprise Architects and decision makers from the logistics industry. Hence, people execute the same process differently and training is conducted by experienced operators on an ad-hoc basis. Furthermore, continuous process improvement is hampered as neither the ideal process nor current issues in as-is processes are visible. A major reason for the missing documentation is the complexity of existing business process modelling languages. Modelling experts are required for initially describing the processes and also for updating the models after process changes. Furthermore, operations people are usually not used to read complex process models in EPCs or BPMN diagrams. In order to overcome these limitations, a domain-specific modelling language which facilitates maintaining up-to-date process models has been designed with a large logistics company in Germany. The paper at hand briefly describes this language and illustrates the method on how to apply it in operations environments.},
